Joe Szwaja’s experience with the Madison-Arcatao Sister City Project in the 1980s has continued to have an influence on his life. For example, in Seattle, where he now lives, he helped to form a kind of grassroots sistering affiliation with Nuevo Amanecer, Guatemala—a town repopulated by refugees from that country’s civil war, which shared much in common with the Salvadoran conflict.

Greenbush (Madison, Wis.)
Libby Schwartz spent her youth in and around the Greenbush community. She was born in 1940 in the neighborhood’s Madison General Hospital (now Meriter Hospital), and departed Madison after graduating from the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy in 1961. She grew up in a two-flat home on Park St. with her extended family, speaking Yiddish with her Russian born grandfather. Her family’s business, Schwartz Pharmacy at 902 Mound St., was a retail and social hub in the Greenbush neighborhood. The original store was demolished in the early 1960s in conjunction with the urban renewal project.
Libby shares her recollections of working at the store in her teen years, helping with stocking the shelves, making malts at the soda fountain, and after obtaining her pharmacy license, filling prescriptions. She vividly recalls visiting the Bush neighborhood’s bakeries, butcher shops and grocery stores where one could buy a fresh challah and lox, and a kosher chicken.

The Milwaukee Bakery at 214 S. Murray Street was operated by the Moskowsky family from 1924-1952. The extended family lived in the apartment above the bakery. Each day the bakers prepared fresh breads on the wood fired hearth for sale all across the city. In particular, residents from the Bush fondly remembered the sweet rolls and the traditional Sabbath kosher challah bread from the bakery. They also produced rye, Vienna, and pumpernickel breads, as well as bagels. A crusty French bread sold for a nickel a loaf. From 1952 until 1957 the Moskowsky family continued to live in the upstairs apartment, but the storefront was rented out to a delicatessen.

Copy of the official Madison Common Council resolution, #42,209, naming Arcatao Madison's first sister city. The resolution was authored by Rosa Escamilla, our first Latinx council member and was passed on April 1, 1986. The “Whereas” section makes for powerful reading as Madison calls out the US government for being "intimately involved in the conflict in El Salvador." Along with Billy Feitlinger, then council president, future mayor of Madison, Sue Bauman is one of the supporting alders. Bauman was Mayor of Madison from 1997-2003 and the first woman to hold that office. Mayor Bauman visited Arcatao in 1998.

List of Public Presentations by the "Gonzalez" family in Madison, Wisconsin, 1984-1985
Sanctuary movement
Refugees
This is a partial list of the presentations that "Rogelio Gonzalez" and his wife, "Maria Gonzalez" gave in Madison from Feb 1984-July 1985. Theirs was a public rather than secret sanctuary. This meant that they were willing and eager to tell their horrific story in order to educate people in Madison about the death squads, terrorism and violence in their country and the US government's role in it. All these presentations helped create the understanding and enthusiasm for the City of Madison officially naming Arcatao, El Salvador its first sister city in 1986. Bob Skloot had kept this list in his papers from that time.

Samuel Moss fondly recalls the Jewish community in the Greenbush neighborhood where he was born in 1938 at St. Mary’s Hospital. His Russian born grandparents moved to Madison in 1924 to open the kosher Milwaukee Bakery on S. Madison (Wis.)
Jewish community centers--Wisconsin
The Workmen’s Circle Labor Lyceum provided a community center for the immigrant Eastern European Jewish community in Madison. The Arbeiter Ring, as it was called in Yiddish (a language which combines Hebrew and German words), is a national organization that provided its members with mutual aid services, as well as Yiddish educational activities, all in a secular Jewish socialist political context.
The local Madison branch (# 479) was founded in 1915. In 1932 the lyceum building was constructed at 41 N. Mills Street. The building was used for social gatherings, public lectures, political meetings, and as a school for teaching young students Yiddish language and cultural activities.

Harvey Barash and his family lived and worked in and around the Greenbush neighborhood from 1939-1951. He was born at Madison General Hospital (now Meriter Hospital) in 1939. Interestingly, after receiving his medical degree from Albert Einstein Medical School in New York City in 1965 and completing his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s and Illinois R&E Hospitals in 1970, and then spending two years as a major in the US Army, Harvey returned to Madison in 1972 to practice and teach at the same hospital where he was born. Notably, Harvey’s father owned and operated Abe's Shoe Repair, a renowned neighborhood business at 1107 ½ Regent (near the corner of Regent and S. Mills Streets). Harvey helped his father, who was deaf, interact with customers at the shoe shop, and assisted with managing the family's rental properties. In addition to sharing stories of his father’s business, Harvey recounts his Greenbush memories of attending Longfellow School, his Talmud Torah (Hebrew school) classes, and the many Jewish stores and institutions in the neighborhood. In 1991, Harvey and his sister Eva authored a book detailing their family’s experiences growing up in the Greenbush neighborhood, anchored by stories of their father’s shoe repair business titled, “Our Father ABE: The Story of a Deaf Shoe Repairman.”

Urban renewal
Sylvia Dworetzky Grunes grew up in the tight knit Jewish community in Madison's Greenbush neighborhood, with her Yiddish-speaking Russian immigrant parents. Sylvia lived with her family in several residences in the Greenbush neighborhood beginning with her birth in 1926 until her marriage in 1946. The family home at 31 S. Mills St. was demolished as part of the 1960s era Triangle Urban Renewal Project which displaced many residents from the Greenbush neighborhood. The site of the former family home was later used to build the new Neighborhood House, still in operation today.
Sylvia shares her recollections of Longfellow elementary school, and the Jewish butchers, grocery stores and synagogues clustered along Mound St. She also describes her time at the Freida Weinstein Workmen’s Circle, on N. Mills St. The “Arbiter Ring” as the Workmen’s Circle organization was called in Yiddish, provided mutual aid for the Jewish community, as well as secular instruction for children in Yiddish culture and language.

Political activists
In the early 1980s when Marc was the staff person for Community Action on Latin America (CALA), they coordinated a program that brought Victor Rubio of the FMLN/FDR together with Neo Mnumzana of the African National Congress (ANC) to speak. The program was titled "Revolution Knows No boundaries." Linking the anti-apartheid struggle with the Salvadoran revolution was very much in the spirit of the times and their organizing.
This is a photo of Marc being arrested at the "glass bank" on Madison's Capitol Square for blocking the doors in a demonstration demanding divestment from apartheid. It was part of the tent city campaign on the Wisconsin State Capitol lawn.

Joe Szwaja played a key role in mobilizing Madisonians in support of the Madison-Arcatao Sister City initiative. As a graduate student at UW, he became involved with Community Action in Latin America (CALA), ultimately joining as paid staff. He, along with Kate Thompson and other local residents concerned about human rights and US policy in Central America, collaborated with Salvadorans, activists with the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), and Madison-area leaders to draft the Sister City resolution that the Council adopted in April 1986. In this interview, Mr. Szwaja reflects on those busy days of organizing in favor of the resolution and the positive impacts of that Sister City relationship—past and present.

Oral history interview with Kara O'Connor, Rae Rocca, and Elizabeth Heinrichs. The three women share the story of 1029 Chandler Street in Madison, Wisconsin, a house built by Rae's grandmother and Elizabeth's great-grandmother, an Italian immigrant named Rachel Rocca, in the 1920s. The house stayed in the Rocca family until Kara's family bought it in 2015. Kara talks about discovering a tombstone with engravings in Italian in the basement while renovating the house, and reaching out to Rae to find out more about the tombstone and the family's history. Rae shares that it was a shock to find out the tombstone was in the house all this time. It belonged to her grandfather, Benedict Rocca (1870-1905), who immigrated from Italy and died young at age 35 in Madison. He is now buried alongside his wife and daughter, and Rae, Kara, and Elizabeth discuss theories about where this original tombstone came from. Rae and Elizabeth also share the history of their grandmother who was a young window and single mother; the home she built, which became a fixture in the family and the site of many family memories; and the Italian community in Madison.

COVID-19 story by Terry Cohn, 2020

Respiratory diseases
Public health
Terry Cohn describes her experience traveling to Portugal and Spain in late winter 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to ramp up in Europe. Terry talks about the logistics of traveling during the travel ban that went into effect in March. Terry began to have symptoms, including a cough and a fever, that turned out to be COVID-19. Terry discusses the process of interacting with the public health department immediately following her positive test, and how contact tracing worked in Madison. Terry talks about the symptoms of the disease, which varied between her and her husband, who also tested positive for COVID-19, and how this experience has affected her view of public health and the need for social distancing and face coverings. <br /><br /><strong>Addendum:</strong> As I listened to my interview, I realized that I left out two important events that occurred during my illness with COVID19. As part of my healing, I tried to avoid focusing on the frightening parts of this illness, but some events replayed themselves. On my second visit to the ER, my encounter with the doctor left me traumatized for weeks. I was hooked up to 3 IV needles when the resident came in to discharge me. He was covered with a shield and mask and all I could see were his empathetic eyes. He gently rubbed my arm and said <br />
<ol>
<li>"You know age is against you."</li>
<li>"I'm glad we didn't have to use a particular cardiac medicine on you, because it is really scary. It stops your heart and then your heart has to be started again."</li>
<li>His parting words "I really hope you make it".</li>
</ol>
He said this three times. These words echoed through my head for weeks as I lay in bed, when I took a shower, and in my dreams. I was not able to tell those words to my husband, daughters, or sisters until I realized that I was getting better. In addition, there was a whole other scene going on at the same time on the other side of the curtain that I was told about after I recovered. My husband, daughters, sisters, family, and the close friends, who checked in daily, were all terrified. I did not realize the fear they were dealing with. I recently learned more about the tears they shed when I was too weak to talk to them, when I was sent to the ER, and when they heard extreme weakness in my voice. While I want to project my gratitude to the Madison Community and to those that provided me with positive thoughts, I must reiterate, this virus is frightening. As we learn more every day, we are finding that we really don't know who will live and who will die, what age it will strike, whether one can develop immunity, and whether it will come back with a greater magnitude.

COVID-19 story by Susie McCormick, 2020

Safer at Home orders
Illnesses
Susie McCormick shares her experience becoming ill during the COVID-19 pandemic. She describes her symptoms, virtual doctors' visits, and going to the emergency room and being tested for COVID-19.
In addition to Susie's audio story, she writes the following addendum: I completely lost my appetite with the sore throat and then, beginning with the fever, I had digestive issues and was unable to keep even bland food in for about 5 days. I finally went with a liquid diet the 6th day and then was gradually able to keep food in but my appetite was nonexistent and I had continuing nausea for about 2-1/2 weeks. I couldn’t taste food or smell it. I lost 6 pounds in that first 10 days of being sick and didn’t gain it back.
I also had a virtual visit a week after the fever when I felt my breathing issues weren’t improving at all. The doctor I spoke with felt trying 5 days of a high dose of prednisone might help improve things. I completed that course and it really didn’t have the usual effect of instantly making things better that I’ve usually seen in the past with a bronchitis or something. I was still using rescue inhalers and nebulizers throughout and it was another week or 10 days beyond that when I was able to reduce use of those. -- Susie McCormick, April 2020
