This photo accompanied a news article in the Wisconsin State Journal on May 24, 1983. It shows the group of refugees in Madison Sanctuary Site #1 at a public sanctuary event at St. Francis Student House in Madison. (l to r in back) the Reverend Art Lloyd of St. Francis Student House, Laurie Lemel (now Melrood) and next to Rev. Art Lloyd but not visible was Rev. Tom Woodward, the chaplain at St. Francis House. Ms Lemel brought the group up from the Texas border with the help of the San Antonio Latin America Solidarity Group. (l to r in front) Amos, Angel who had been badly tortured in El Salvador just before leaving for sanctuary, a little girl and her mother, Eliza. They are all part of the documentary made by Carl and Kathy Hersh called The New Underground Railroad (PBS, 1983).
