Description
The Agudas Achim synagogue, founded in 1904 at 827 Mound Street, served Madison’s Jewish Orthodox community. The main floor of the worship sanctuary was reserved for men, and the women occupied the balcony area. The community Hebrew School (Talmud Torah) held classes in the basement, beginning in 1925.
The building was sold in 1949, the same year the congregation started construction on a new house of worship five blocks to the west at 1406 Mound St. The new Beth Israel Center building is located at the corner of S. Randall Ave. and Mound St.
