Ms. White describes an early encounter with the Municipal Building as a shortcut during cold winter months to the back of the Fess Hotel on King Street, where she would meet a young man with whom she was in a relationship. She describes getting married to that young man in front of a judge in the Municipal Building later, and then being involved in public meetings that determined the future of east side Madison landmarks such as Olbrich Gardens and the Garver Feed Mill.

Doyle, as a 13 year old from Winona, Minnesota, was first introduced to Madison from photographs of the Dow demonstrations in 1967. He was involved in the Food Cooperative movement in Winona, which had a connection to Madison, and allowed him to visit Madison frequently in the early 1970s. He went on to form the Yagri (?) Valley Community Farm. The Wisconsin Historical Society helped mentor and influence his interests in public history. In 1985, Doyle attended the University to get his degree in History.

Small, a Milwaukee resident, spent most of his life politically active. In his earlier life, he spent time at the Milwaukee Sentinel, getting involved at the Chicago Convention and protesting the reelection of Richard Nixon. His most memorable moments were meeting John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who personally helped fund posters for his events and paid for his lawyers in Miami. Today, Small is getting involved again and fighting for his community in Milwaukee.

Lee discusses her time working at the Memorial Union, from the friendships she created and memorable events of being robbed at gunpoint. She talks about her parents moving to Madison, her living situations, and meeting Steve Miller.

Student protesters
Oberdorfer relates his family’s history in Wisconsin and their relationship to the city of Madison and UW-Madison. Oberdorfer studied zoology and neurobiology and had a good experience in the sciences and the humanities departments. Oberdorfer relates his experience working as a photographer with the underground newspaper Connections. Oberdorfer was present and photographed key moments of the second Dow demonstration in October 1967. Oberdorfer was also involved in the TAA strike of 1970. He speaks to the different cultural and political movements that were taking place on campus. He expands on the lead-up to Dow as well as the different culture clashes on campus and in the city.

Michael Moss received his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD from UW-Madison. He was involved in the music scene and played throughout campus. He was a Master’s student during the Sterling Hall Bombing and noticed a change in the culture of UW-Madison at that time.
